Meditation Hut

2020

Designer

Paul Kweton,AIA

Project Synopsis

The project’s objective is to provide a sustainable public installation for human relaxation through stimulation of different senses, including visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, vestibular, proprioceptive stimuli. A combination of natural materials (living and ‘dead’) propose a meditative dialogue with our senses.

Awakening of our senses

The meditation hut provides temporary shelter from the environment. It is designed as a public place that encourages self awareness by stimulation of different human senses. The shifting play of light and shadow stimulate our visual sense. Smells, ranging from wet hazelnut wood to flourishing live plants awaken our olfactory sense. The mass and texture of the granite stone and timber framing invite our tactile sense to be revived. It is a place of calming and relaxation. The hut’s appearance and performance will change over time. Nature is invited allowed to take over and allow for a perpetual change of experience and interaction.

Materiality

The project is comprised of the combination of natural components including:
- 2x sustainable timber framing for the overal hut structure
- granite stone pods embedded in the ground holding water and dirt and acting as foundation for the structural framing
- hazelnut twigs
- plants: vines, bushes, fruits, evergreens, etc... (adjusted per location)

Location

Bayou Park, Houston, Texas, USA
